Take Ballet to the Streets

Take Ballet to the Streets is Brooklyn Ballet’s free performance series in community centers, parks, waterfront piers, senior citizen centers, museums, schoolyards and more—all places where new audiences can encounter ballet.

More than just performances of the Company’s repertory in public spaces, Take Ballet to the Streets gives audience information about ballet vocabulary, basic approaches to choreography and the history of ballet. Some performances also feature young dancers from Brooklyn Ballet School.

Take Ballet to the Streets had its inaugural performance for 250 audience members in Marine Park on June 8th, 2004. The show included a performance of “Etudes for Sixth Grade” by 25 public school students from Canarsie’s IS 68. We have returned to Marine Park each year to a growing audience of more than 400 people.

We’ve produced Take Ballet to the Streets in Downtown Brooklyn, DUMBO, East Flatbush in Amersfort Park, Marine Park, at Farragut (PS 307 schoolyard), and at MCU Park during a Cyclones baseball game.

In recent years, Brooklyn Ballet has performed a leading-edge, hip hop, pop-up Nutcracker at holiday tree-lightings and at Marty Markowitz's Holiday show in East New York.
