Brooklyn Ballet’s incredible results and progress would simply not be possible without the enthusiastic and generous support of people and businesses in our community. Over 1,000 children annually are introduced to classical ballet through our “Elevate” in-school dance program and this year four “Elevate” graduates received full scholarships to study at Joffrey’s Summer Intensive. It is now time for us to give Brooklyn’s children a ‘dance home’ in their own community where they can receive a full conservatory level training without which a professional career in dance is not possible.
“It makes me feel like I can do anything when I’m up there.” – John Michael, student of Brooklyn Ballet School
“The thing I really love about dancing with Brooklyn Ballet is that it’s really calming—it calms me down when I get angry.” – Brianna, student of Brooklyn Ballet School
Without a home for Brooklyn Ballet, this talent will go elsewhere or, worse still, will fade away.
We have a breakthrough opportunity this year to create a home for Brooklyn Ballet in a splendid new residential development. The location is perfect—a large storefront in downtown Brooklyn, readily accessible to students and audience members throughout Brooklyn. The space also boasts a 200-seat black box theater making it possible for Brooklyn Ballet’s professional Company to continue creating and performing new repertory providing Brooklyn audiences with the artistic excellence they’ve come to expect. The time is right for us to take this exciting step and create a ballet home for our community, our children and our audiences.
The Borough President’s Office has committed Capital Costs for the build out of the space, however to become operational we will need to raise an additional $120,000 by the end of June 2008. Independence Community Foundation has kicked off our Annual Appeal this year with a $5,000 gift and will match this with an additional $5,000 if we can increase our individual giving by 50%.
