News from Councilmember Lewis A. Fidler 3/08
Council Member Fidler secured funds to bring Brooklyn Ballet’s Elevate Program into six local schools throughout the 46th Council District including PS 251 where these four young dancers began
On Thursday evening, March 27, 2008, at the Flatlands Civic Association’s monthly meeting four young dancers from PS 251will perform with the Brooklyn Ballet’s Youth Ensemble. These talented dancers were discovered through Brooklyn Ballet’s in-school dance program, “Elevate”, funded by Council Member Fidler. In addition to the in-school program, these young people study ballet twice a week on a scholarship with Brooklyn Ballet and their accomplishments include guest appearances in Santiago, Dominican Republic and scholarships to the Joffrey Ballet School in Manhattan.
“The purpose of the “Elevate” program is to expose children to the experience of classical ballet and to provide scholarships for continued training to gifted children from Brooklyn’s communities,” stated Lynn Parkerson Artistic Director for Brooklyn Ballet. She continued, “We are grateful to Council Member Fidler for securing the funds to go into the community schools.”
Fidler, a staunch supporter of during school day arts programming and Chairman of the New York City Council’s Youth Services Committee, is thrilled to be able to secure the necessary funding to provide at least one cultural enhancement at each of the schools in his district.
All are welcome to attend the performance and hear Council Member Fidler who is their guest speaker on Thursday evening, March 27, 2008 at 8:00 pm 5701 Avenue H (between Avenue H and East 57th Street).
Great Local Human Interest Story with good photo and video opportunity.
