The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy presents Brooklyn Ballet’s “Take Ballet to the Streets” at the Tobacco Warehouse in DUMBO
Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy 7/07
The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy presents Brooklyn Ballet’s “Take Ballet to the Streets” at the Tobacco Warehouse in DUMBO on Friday July 20 at 7pm. The program will feature new works by Lynn Parkerson and Caridad Martinez including “Brooklyn Caprice”, combining classical and street dance styles. The program is followed by a Dance Party with Soul Summit DJ, Sadiq. So come dance with us!
“Brooklyn Caprice has become a signature piece for our Company" says Artistic Director Lynn Parkerson. "Its aliveness comes from the free flowing communication between dancers of wide-ranging styles. Their contrasts and harmonies provide a whole new context for the ballet form and I am always surprised by what happens. The Tobacco Warehouse, my favorite Brooklyn venue, provides a spectacular backdrop for the work."
Brooklyn Caprice features ten ballet dancers’ and four street dancers’ converging interpretations of their classical and contemporary ballet, pop and lock, and break dance movement styles. The accompanying music collage ranges from baroque to reggaeton, and includes an original score by Jim Papoulis.
Articulos Femeninos (Feminine Articles) choreographed by Caridad is a gestural response to what she felt after seeing conceptual artist, Jessica Sofia Mitrani‘s, skywriting/site specific/intervention art installation of the same title. A dance for three women the work makes reference to feminine articles, “the”,”a”,”an” as distinguished from masculine ones in languages such as Spanish. Ms. Mitrani created the costumes.
Brooklyn Ballet presented the world premiere of Articulos Femeninos during the Company’s October 2006 Mexico tour at the invitation of Mexico’s Cultural Consulate of Chiapas.
The dancers include Dante Adela, Khiara Bridges, Mark Burns, Jamar Goodman, Andrea Long, Keiko Nakamura, Dartanion Reed, Sierra Ring, Kerry Shea, Rob Smiles and Supreme among others.
