Naazir and Shaakir Muhammad featured with Rahm Emmanuel in the Daily News as “Lords of the Dance”
“Lords of the Dance,” an article by Joe Dziemianowicz of the Daily News published November 16, attributes a new respect for boys in ballet to Rahm Emanuel, as well as the hugely successful Billy Elliot musical. The article interviews several boy dancers from Billy Elliot as well as students from top ballet schools, including Naazir and Shaakir Muhammad from Brooklyn Ballet. Nicole Cornell, Brooklyn Ballet’s Administrative Assistant, has accepted a full-time position with New York City Ballet.
Beginning September 29th Nicole Cornell will be Coordinator for the Balanchine Trust and NY Choreographic Institute! We at Brooklyn Ballet are very proud of her and of course sorry to lose her. Nicole joined Brooklyn Ballet first as an inspiring teacher in our Elevate outreach program, then taught at Brooklyn Ballet School before assuming the role of Administrative Assistant. Her contribution to our institution was immense and I know she will be a true asset to the staff at New York City Ballet.

$160,000 in capital funds awarded to Brooklyn Ballet!
The Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and Council Member David Yasky contributed to Brooklyn Ballet’s Capital Campaign for the initial outfitting of a state of the art facility in Downtown Brooklyn.
The Department of Cultural Affairs awarded Brooklyn Ballet $24,000 for program development.
Councilman Lew Fidler renews $18,500 Grant for Brooklyn Ballet’s “Elevate” in 6 Public Schools. Brooklyn Ballet’s “Elevate” an in-school dance program begins its sixth year in District 46 through the generosity of Councilman Lew Fidler. Our program includes an annual “Take Ballet to the Streets” performance in Marine Park where last June over 150 students from neighborhoods across the district performed for over 500 audience members.

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will be hosting this event that honors all institutions awarded capital funds this year. As a recipient of capital funds, Brooklyn Ballet has not only been invited to attend, but also asked to perform at the event.

Caridad Martinez, Brooklyn Ballet’s School Director, and former principal dancer with the Cuban National Ballet, to host International Summer Dance Intensive
This intensive for international students age 10-18 includes faculty from the most recognized dance schools in the world including the Vaganova School and Cuban School of Ballet.
Faculty includes Ms. Martinez, Elena Kurnikova, Robert Hill, Fidel Garcia, Norma Garcia, Jennifer Archibald, Lorena Ramirez Moreno and Charlene “Chi-Chi” Smith.
The International Summer Dance Intensive follows an initial visit to the Dominican Republic by Ms. Martinez and Brooklyn Ballet students who were invited to perform The Nutcracker with Ballet Clasico Santiago in December '07. Classes take place at the 92nd Street Y Harkness Dance Center.
