Choreographers of the 19th century were inspired by the natural world to create some of the most treasured Ballets in the classical canon. Brooklyn Ballet embraces and transforms these works; deconstructing the Waltz of the Flowers and Snowflake Waltz, and recasting the Tarantella and Afternoon of a Faun with street dancers.

The Sylph, the Spider, the Faun, the Flower, the Snowflake, all become subjects of our exploration. In the Galleries, in juxtaposition to the Art on display, dancers will perform vignettes in various constellations throughout. A continuous work inspired by the exhibition will be adapted for a performance in The Loft space.

In support of the exhibition Human/Nature.

Museum admission is included with ticket purchase.

Culturally immersive, The Brooklyn Nutcracker transforms familiar Nutcracker characters and scenes to represent the heart of Brooklyn's cultural mosaic. From a mysterious pop and locking Herr Drosselmeyer and a daring hip hop battle scene, to a bohemian Mother Ginger, the characters embark on an enchanting journey from Victorian Flatbush to modern day - with exciting detours through notable Brooklyn landmarks, including a visit to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden and a Flatbush Avenue subway platform.

Performed in April 2023 at The Mark O'Donnell Theater at The Actors Fund Arts Center, Rejoice! The Village Dances features live music and dance that bridges ballet and street dance with works of the past and the now.

From the collaborative world premiere Scripture by Brooklyn Ballet’s founder and director Lynn Parkerson to the restaging of Antony Tudor’s Fandango (1963) and the company’s 2013 work Spiders, Cooks, and Mood Swings, this anniversary season explores the representation of community in contemporary and classical dance and the ways Brooklyn Ballet continues to re-define and revitalize this storytelling medium.

Brooklyn Ballet is a professional, not-for-profit dance company that reflects Brooklyn’s many diverse communities. Founded in 2002 by artistic director Lynn Parkerson, it is dedicated to radically revisioning the historic art form of ballet, with public and community performances and a robust educational program.

The evening will feature Unnatural Surrounding performed by immigrant and other dancers from Brooklyn Ballet against the backdrop of Utopia Process (2018), a video piece by The Immigrant Artist Biennial alumni artist Chen Wang. As Brooklyn Ballet dancers enliven the work in clusters throughout the space, the video uses surreal sets and costumes to splice utopian and dystopian fictional digital spaces. The juxtaposition and melting of these dark yet fantastical scenes acts as a playful mirror to the artist’s rejection of societal norms while constructing a new vision of gender and sexuality.

Dancers: ChrissyAnn Carpenter, Bobby “Anime” Major, Aoi Ohno, Christine Emi Sawyer, and Ladell “Mr. Ocean” Thomas.
